Deacon Duties

  • Usher – arrive 20 minutes prior to the service.
  • Take note of which deacons are assigned; recruit a deacon if necessary
  • Deacon in Charge during the service (and emergencies).
  • Lock the doors from 12th street after the first 10 minutes of the service. Be sure to get trained on the proper way to do this so as to not damage the doors.
  • Count the number of people in church, including the choir loft. Get counts from West Side deacon for people attending outside the sanctuary and those in the Family Room. Leave the total on Kristen’s desk or email it to office@trcholland.org.
  • Sit in the back of the sanctuary.
  • Be the communicator with note or verbally to the preacher if necessary.
  • Collect on the west center aisle; each pass one plate. West Center deacon begins the passing – the other deacon will follow your lead. Rotate rows.
  • Consolidate the offering plates.
  • Deacons proceed together to the front with the offering at the start of the doxology/end of transition. 
  • Carry the prayer box to the front and hand it to the liturgist at the end of the doxology; turn out to the side to descend down the steps.
  • After the service, with East Center deacon, bring offering plates to the office and secure cash and checks in a bank bag and place in the locked dropbox.

  • Sit near the front of the sanctuary for Active Shooter Duty. Be ready to assist Deacon in Charge with emergencies.
  • Escort east side children to front and then follow them out for children’s worship through the west aisle to the doors until met by a worship center leader.
  • Collect on the East center aisle – follow the lead of the West Center deacon, pass one plate rotating rows.
  • Consolidate offering plates
  • Deacons proceed together to the front with the offering at the start of the doxology/end of transition; turn out to the side to descend down the steps after doxology. 
  • Notify Children in Worship of Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession so they know the service is near the end.
  • Be ready to assist Deacon in Charge (West Center Deacon) with emergencies.
  • After the service, with the West Center deacon, bring offering plates to the office and secure cash and checks in a bank bag and place in the locked dropbox.
  • Sit in the hallway outside the nursery; watch the door for prevention of Active Shooters or other threats. Return to the service for offertory and doxology then resume place by door. 
  • Lock the doors on East side of the church (by the prayer room) after the first 10 minutes of the service
  • Return to the service for offertory and doxology then resume place by door
  • Watch service on zoom if possible
  • Count people attending outside the sanctuary and those in the Family Room and give count to Deacon in Charge.
  • Collect with one plate on the West side.
  • Be ready to assist Deacon in Charge (West Center Deacon) with emergencies.
  • After the service, with the East Center deacon, bring offering plates to the office and secure cash and checks in a bank bag and place in the locked dropbox.
  • Be alert for people needing assistance.
  • Set up chairs in the back if needed.
  • Bring the offering box to the office after the service and place the money in a bag and into the cash drawer. 
  • Be alert for people using wheelchairs or walkers. There is wheelchair space on each side aisle; try to save these for those who need it. Assist people with parking and later retrieving their walkers.
  • Set up chairs in the back if needed.
  • Hold back people once the service has begun (only very lightly enforced; resume seating people during the first hymn).
  • Consolidate the offering plates.
  • Deacons proceed together to the front with the offering at the start of the doxology/end of transition.
